Maternal-Fetal Medicine (MFM) is the practice of treating high-risk pregnancy. Typically requiring an additional 2-3 years of education after becoming an OBGYN, MFM specialists handle every pregnancy-related issue that isn’t routine. At New Hope Fertility Center, we understand how critical it is to be healthy and also have a healthy, ongoing pregnancy.
By definition, all pregnancies derived from assisted reproduction (IVF, ICSI) are to be considered high-risk. A High-risk pregnancy is one that threatens the health or life of the mother or her fetus. Conditions like high blood pressure, preeclampsia, abnormal growth rates, developmental issues, and bleeding are believed to be more prevalent in patients who have undergone traditional IVF. However, the best fertility doctors at New Hope Fertility Center always counsel our patients that this is merely terminology and that every patient is unique. Many women who undergo IVF will still be considered high-risk with regular ultrasounds and no risk factors that show up through testing.
WHAT IS A HIGH RISK PREGNANCY?
High-risk simply means that you will want extra care to ensure you both are healthy and happy. Many couples experience a rollercoaster of emotion hearing that their pregnancy is high-risk. It is understandable as you have spent so much time, money, heart and soul into creating this baby. You want everything to be okay.
Don’t be alarmed!
Maternal-Fetal Medicine doctors often just want to monitor your pregnancy a little closer for any indication of issues. Having a high-risk pregnancy doesn’t mean something will go wrong, just that something may go wrong. For all the same reasons that hearing your pregnancy is considered high-risk, you should rest assured that your MFM doctor is taking care of you and your baby.
