Diagnostic X-Ray Exam
HSG is one of the first fertility tests that may be ordered by your physician. The procedure is used to view your fallopian tubes and uterus and is routinely recommended for women who are having difficulty conceiving or have a history of miscarriages.
The New Hope Imaging Center:
New Hope is one of the few private clinics nationwide to offer HSG exams onsite. All exams are performed in our dedicated Imaging Center, which is conveniently located on the second floor of our Columbus Circle office. Unlike a hospital or radiology setting, the New Hope Imaging Center offers the utmost privacy and comfort and the expertise of world-recognized fertility physicians. How Does HSG Work?
HSG is a quick, non-surgical, diagnostic exam that takes x-ray images of the fallopian tubes and uterus. The results can help identify some of the potential causes of female infertility by showing if:
- the fallopian tubes are open or blocked (blocked tubes can prevent sperm from reaching egg)
- the uterus has a normal or abnormal shape (abnormal uterine shape can cause miscarriages)
- If the uterine cavity has fibroids, polyps, or scars (which can prevent proper embryo implantation)
WHAT HAPPENS DURING AN HSG EXAM?
HSG is performed on an examination table. During the 15-minute procedure, a liquid contrast dye is injected into the uterus and a series of x-ray images is taken. See the step-by-step procedure guide below.
WHEN WILL MY EXAM BE SCHEDULED?
Your HSG will be scheduled between days 5 and 12 of your cycle (after your period and before ovulation). Your results will be ready within 24 hours.
IS THE EXAM PAINFUL?
You may experience cramping during and after the exam. Some find the exam temporarily uncomfortable. Taking over-the-counter pain relievers, like ibuprofen, is recommended.
IS THERE ANY DOWNTIME?
You may resume normal activity immediately after the HSG.
IS HSG SAFE?
There are minimal risks associated with HSG. The x-ray device procedures a very low amount of radiation (even less an airport security checkpoint!). a pre-screening questionnaire is used to rule out any allergies or conditions that could interfere with the exam.
How will my results impact my fertility plan?
The results of the HSG will assist your physician in determining the best treatment plan for your fertility journey. For example, your physician may continue the journey as recommended in the initial office visit, or the physician may adjust the plan to order additional diagnostic tests, or recommend a corrective procedure.
Step-by-step guide:
- Step 1:
During the procedure, you will recline on the exam table and place your legs into a pair of stirrups. A speculum (the same type used during a routine gynecological exam) is used to open the vaginal canal. - Step 2:
A thin tube, called a cannula, is inserted through the vagina and into the cervix (the opening of the uterine cavity). Liquid contrast dye is pushed through the cannula to fill the uterine cavity. If there are no blockages, the fallopian tubes will also fill with liquid. - Step 3:
When the uterus and tubes are filled, an x-ray imaging device called a fluoroscope is positioned over the pelvis. A series of images are taken. The exam should last between 5 and 15 minutes. Your results will be ready within a few days of the.
